Portable Fire Pit for Camping | AdjustaGrill Campfire Pan Guide

What Makes a Good Portable Fire Pit for Camping?

Not all portable fire pits are created equal. If you've ever shown up to a permitted campsite, a river put-in, or a National Park trailhead only to be told your fire setup doesn't meet requirements — you know exactly what we're talking about.

A real portable fire pit needs to do three things: contain the fire completely, leave zero trace on the ground, and pack small enough to actually bring on a trip.

Why Elevation Off the Ground Matters

The number one reason fire pans get rejected at permit checkpoints is ground contact. When a fire burns directly on soil, it sterilizes the ground underneath, kills microorganisms, and leaves a scar that takes years to recover.

A proper portable fire pit elevates the fire on legs — keeping heat off the ground and allowing air to circulate underneath for a cleaner, more complete burn. The AdjustaGrill Campfire Pit uses a mesh floor and six-inch legs to do exactly this.

Grand Canyon NPS Fire Pan Requirements

The Grand Canyon National Park has some of the strictest fire pan requirements in the country — which is why we use it as our benchmark.

To be permit-compliant on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, your fire pan must:

  • Have solid sides and a solid or mesh bottom
  • Elevate the fire off the ground
  • Contain all ash with no spillage
  • Be large enough to hold a full fire

The AdjustaGrill Campfire Pit measures 24" x 16" x 3" with 6" legs and meets these requirements. If it passes the Canyon, it passes everywhere.

Leave No Trace Principles and Fire

Leave No Trace principle #5 is "Minimize Campfire Impacts." Using a contained fire pan is one of the most effective ways to follow this principle in the field. Pack in your fire pan, pack out your ash — leave the ground exactly as you found it.

Pairs With the AdjustaGrill Stake Grill

The Campfire Pit pairs directly with the patented AdjustaGrill stake grill system. Drive the stake through the mesh floor of the pan, swing the grate over your fire, and you have a complete adjustable campfire cooking system — contained, permitted, and ready to cook a real meal.
