The AdjustaGrill Story: Three Decades of Authentic Outdoor Cooking
Since 1994, AdjustaGrill has been the choice of serious outdoor enthusiasts who understand that wood fire cooking delivers unmatched flavor. Our patented campfire grill was designed by Gregory Sherry, someone who has literally spent hundreds of days and nights cooking over open flames in the world's most remote wilderness—from the Grand Canyon to the Middle Fork of the Salmon to Desolation Canyon. AdjustaGrill was born from real-world outdoor cooking experience, not office theory.
At age eleven, sleeping in a self-made lean-to shelter in Northern Minnesota at ten below zero, I learned that a good fire means everything. That early lesson shaped a lifetime of outdoor adventure—skiing the mountains of Utah and running some of the most demanding whitewater rivers in North America. After hundreds of nights wilderness camping and cooking over wood fires, I knew exactly what serious outdoor cooks needed in a campfire grill. In 1994, I secured U.S. Design Patent Des. 369,939 because I knew I had something worth protecting.
For over 30 years, AdjustaGrill was the on-shelf camping grill of choice at Sportsman's Warehouse, Bass Pro Shops, and Cabela's. Our adjustable campfire grill has fed people in the backcountry and at base camp across America. We've proven our patented grill design works where it matters most—when you're miles from civilization and your outdoor cooking gear must perform.
Our Motto: “wood tastes better than gas-gas tastes better than charcoal”. Serious outdoor cooks, campers, and backpackers know the difference. That's AdjustaGrill—the original patented campfire grill since 1994.
About Greg Sherry – Founder of AdjustaGrill
My name is Greg Sherry. I was born August 1, 1961, and I’ve spent my whole life chasing exactly what I love instead of what I was “supposed” to do.
In 1981–82 I was a young tram operator at Snowbird, wearing a polka-dotted conductor’s hat. You can still see me in the left window of the blue tram in the old Willie Bogner ski promo photo. When summer came and they laid off the seasonal crew, I walked into a music store, auditioned for a band called Video Cowboy, and became a road musician who played music at night and skied every day. I never liked the nine-to-five hustle with the masses.”
That same attitude has shaped everything since. I played in Tempo Timers (opened for Charlie Musselwhite multiple times), Jenny and the Betts, Electric Toy, and I’ve kept my power-rock trio Good Gravy going since 1990. I finished my Liberal Education at the University of Utah while gigging full-time. And in the 2020–21 season I skied 136 days, logged almost 5 million vertical feet, broke two ribs in Wilber Bowl missed 16 days, and still came back to win Snowbird’s Lord of the Wings contest. Averaging 130 days per season for 45 years.
Always be prepared! During my adventures I’ve also had my share of close calls. Nearly struck lightning in the Uinta Mtn. while skiing Bald Mtn. on Memorial Weekend, stalked by a wolverine on the Snake River bridge at Jackson Lake, and survived a tornado while setting up my booth at the 1999 Outdoor Retailer show — one of the first people interviewed on camera afterward. Those survival stories are all part of who I am.
On the river, I’ve done the Grand Canyon (5½ times), Westwater Canyon over 200 times, with multiple runs on the Yampa, Desolation, Arkansas, Salt, Snake, Main Salmon, Middle Fork Salmon, Cataract Canyon, Selway at high water (6.5 ft and raining), and most of the permitted western rivers — all in my 14-foot high-side raft.
All that river time is exactly why AdjustaGrill exists.
Back then every fire pan on the river was either super heavy, super expensive, or both. Cambridge, Partners Steel, and NRS all made tanks. We used to get by with old oil pans or two-piece pans that fit in a rocket box, but those weren’t great — especially the galvanized ones that could off-gas. So, I designed my own lighter fire pan with a mesh floor and folding legs. Paired it with the Adjustagrill, a heavy 13-gauge steel 16” x 16” swivel grill that gives you real stove-knob control over a campfire. You can raise it, lower it, or swing it completely off the fire in one second. When my patent ran out 15 years ago, a bunch of knockoffs came out, but my sales increased. Turns out real river runners and campers can tell the difference.
I’m the sole owner of AdjustaGrill. I still own the patents and trademarks, I still use the grill on every trip, I have one on my backyard deck I use year-round, and I still live the same “follow your heart’s desire” life I chose back in 1982.
If you’re the kind of person who camps, rafts, or just loves a good fire, this grill was built by someone who’s actually been out there doing it for 45 years.
Thanks for being here. — Greg Sherry
